Pros:

Cons:

It could use a more modern look and feel. The software does give our end users some trouble - but not the service or website itself.

Excellent Security, UI, and file management

5.0 7 years ago

Pros:

Panopto's integration with our university's LMS is vital to keeping our video lectures secure, but also easily accessible to viewers who are enrolled in a course. The UI is also highly favored by viewers.

Cons:

Small learning curve/training for new admins or instructors who have no background in video. Support documents on the Panopto site are great, but it would help to have one-on-one training for new admin users.

Panopto is a great video hosting tool, but the other features need major work!

2.0 2 years ago

Pros:

Panopto is great at hosting videos which is its main function. We needed a new video hosting tool at the university because our previous tool (Techsmith Knowmia) was going away permanently. We loved Knowmia and wish we could have kept it, but I digress. Panopto was the best tool available after piloting and testing several others. The training and support that Panopto provides enterprise customers are really good. We got personalized training sessions along with weekly webinars. We still get weekly support if needed. The auto-captioning function is also really helpful and quite good at captioning correctly on its own.

Cons:

Panopto editing and recording are sub-par. The user interface is beyond confusing! I would rather use a different tool to record/screen-share videos than mess with Panopto. Editing is just about useless using Panopto. The ability to share and collaborate on videos is confusing. The folder structure system makes no sense.

Panopto Creates a Seamless Experience to Create, Distribute, and View Course Lectures

5.0 7 years ago

Comments: The auto-scheduling and auto-publishing of videos to specific Canvas courses is extremely valuable. Other players in this space currently require manually publishing.

Pros:

Panopto is tightly integrated with the Canvas LMS. We have been piloting this product for four months. We are able to schedule the lecture captures, associate each video with the instructor and appropriate Canvas course, and automatically publish the videos, so that students can review the course content at a later time on nearly any type of device.

Cons:

There is a cost associated with piloting this software, but it's not too excessive. Many companies offer a completely free trial period. It would be nice to check it out for free.

Does what it's supposed to!

5.0 7 years ago

Pros:

It's a great tool for recording our classes and lectures so students can access them later. A fantastic way for students who happen to miss a class to get caught up!

Cons:

I don't think it's a secret that the web browser experience is lacking in all but IE. Most of us are Mac users and Safari is never happy with Panopto.

Panopto Review

3.0 4 years ago

Comments: I appreciate it for what it is. I think it could be improved, but that won't stop me from using it.

Pros:

This software allows me to watch lectures from graduate school online and through our Canvas course homepage. I appreciate that it allows me to determine the playback speed.

Cons:

It is not extremely user friendly, especially from a mobile standpoint. I wish it was easier to use on mobile devices.

Very easy to work with and watch

5.0 6 years ago

Pros:

Clicking back and forth on the slides is very easy to do, so you can skip to a certain part of the lecture if you remember what slide you took notes on. This is great for my classes which have excruciatingly long lectures, and getting through them and finding the key points can be extremely useful.

Cons:

Of course, since it's a different software than what others normally use, it can be hard to integrate this with what we already use rather than just sending a YouTube link. The E-learning environment that I work in uses YouTube much more than Panopto, which is probably due to this.

great for recording managing and sharing videos

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: I have used Panopto to use some of my lecturers to go with the power point slides for a class I was teaching in class but needed to be transitioned into a virtual platform and was satisfied with the features and ease with which I was able to do it

Pros:

Recently used Panopto to facilitate e learning as I had to transform course content of a class that was supposed to be taught in-class to maintain social distancing. It was fairly easy to record some of my lectures to be incorporated into the power point presentations. It would have been otherwise difficult to explain some of the points without the aid of Panopto.

Cons:

I really have not come across something that I would like to particularly mention in this context. Editing the videos were a little troublesome but overall I think it did a good job.

Great for remote students

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: I like it for what it is. It makes it easy for recording and posting lectures.

Pros:

I like how easy it is to record class lectures and rewatch them after class. This makes it easy for remote students to get the same information as those who can regularly attend.

Cons:

when compared to some other video recording software, it has very minimal features. It's mainly just a screen capture.

Generally easy for most to use, a bit confusing for some.

4.0 6 years ago

Comments: Overall good. No better or worse than Camtasia

Pros:

I personally found it easy to use - to create a video with a PowerPoint presentation and to review it. My audience was able to watch it once it was ready.

Cons:

I found it a bit hard/frustrating to edit if I messed up. It seems like the best thing to do would be start from scratch so make sure that you have rehearsed your script well.

PanOpto for lecture recording, media collections, class engagement, and more

4.0 3 years ago

Comments: My overall experience with PanOpto has been favorable. It's brought about increased self-reflection in teaching, and my students love ability to circle back and review collected class proceedings prior to papers and tests.

Pros:

I most like the collection folder organization and customizable sharing permissions. It's great for lecture recordings to help document class proceedings for subsequent reflections and student engagement strategies. The picture-in-picture recordings, the automatic tagging of timestamps with the progression of PowerPoint slides, and the versatility of downloaded outputs make this a great product for education.

Cons:

The connection between the desktop client and browser-base interface that we've integrated into our LMS is not easy to navigate, especially for newcomers. Consequently, the tool is predominately used by seasoned instructors. I've found it productive to give students creation access to class media collections, but there is definitely a nominal learning curve in place, where students at first use, lack the confidence to configure input and output sources. Also, it continues to frustrate me that capturing screen audio has been in beta for so long. If there is a process for multiple video inputs, then should also be a way to include multiple audio inputs, as well.

Overall I liked It. It is Easy to Use

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: Overall I am Happy. It is really helpful for me.

Pros:

Instead of requiring a variety of tools to complete the same task in the past, I was able to have a single solution to meet all of my needs for creating, editing, and storing videos.

Cons:

Navigating and learning how to utilise each video editing tool were my only early difficulties.

Simple yet robust video capture software/service

4.0 7 years ago

Pros:

Using the integration with our LMS, D2L has been a life saver. It simplifies the process for our instructors to record videos and share them with their students. Additionally, students can record back for public speaking classes. We also really appreciate the automatic closed captioning service. While it is not 100% accurate, it does encourage the use of the captions, which is a nice feature.

Cons:

The recorder can be buggy at times. Some of our users have difficulty installing it. We would love to see a web based advanced editor as well. Right now there is one, but it only works in Internet Explorer.

Fully automated video management made possible?

5.0 3 years ago

Comments: It made my experience of taking university courses much more efficient, where i could watch classes i didn't attend or watch them again if one time wasn't enough.

Pros:

Panopto integrates perfectly with existing business processes such as video conferences, with this software you can watch countless time previous discussions, interviews and even webinar or courses too. It has plenty of features that save a lot of time, for example you can search key words or upgrade the speed of the video to watch it more shortly. Most of the work the software does can be automated which enables bussinesses to cover following demands in advance.

Cons:

As long videos might enjoy great quality the software does take some times eventually to load retracements or advancements in the video playing. Nevertheless, this is understandable.

Panopto

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: We had a need for an easy way to capture our Grand Rounds weekly meetings for medical staff. Panopto was the perfect solution. The videos can be shared later with medical staff here as well at other locations. We have also utilized the live streaming feature to push out content to our 20,000+ employees.

Pros:

Easy to use, create, and share content with others. Also love that it has the ability to live stream presentations.

Cons:

I really don't have any negative issues. We have been using for Panopto for over 6 years and continue to uttilize it more.

Good Software for Dual-Screen Videos

5.0 5 years ago

Comments: Overall, I enjoy using this program and would definitely recommend it to anyone who makes videos for any purpose.

Pros:

I always wondered how people created videos that allowed a secondary screen, so I was very happy when I came across this program. It was introduced to me in my graduate course, but of course I explored to see what I could use for my students. It is incredibly helpful for me to show students how to complete certain tasks like formatting for a particular writing program. I can verbally explain the steps but also show them on my screen. This is also nice for presentations, as the video can switch between the primary screen of someone speaking to a secondary screen of pictures, charts, or graphs.

Cons:

The only problem I had in the beginning was navigation and figuring out how to use each tool for editing videos. I did eventually figure it out but maybe the layout of the tools could be improved or a tutorial could be included in some format.

Panopto works well with Canvas

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: A well-rounded video/lecture recording tool that faculty members should have access to.

Pros:

The most useful features in Panopto revolve around the Web recording tool. It works just as well as a software application.

Cons:

Some may say it could lack some teaching features like polling, but the quizzing and other powerful features outshine.

OF GREAT HELP

5.0 6 years ago

Pros:

I am studying a master and we use panoptom, we are all hallucinated, they record the classes in an interactive way and then we can review them at home when we want, see the power points in detail, choose which camera we can see on the screen; teacher, blackboard, P, Point, youtube, videos. To review doubts or prepare exams is like returning to receive the class for you only when it is best for you, and also write a word or text said during the class and you will be immediately looking for it.

Cons:

Nothing negative I can say. It seems an incredible tool for all students

Easy to Use, Edit and Share Video

4.0 4 years ago

Comments: This a great way to collaborate on any project that requires video and confidentiality.

Pros:

I like that it was very easy to set up recording and save videos. It's also easy to edit videos and to share them with colleagues.

Cons:

In these Covid days, we end up recording video from zoom meetings, and there is a weird echo in the audio that makes it difficult to understand.

Recording 101

4.0 8 years ago

Comments: I used Panopto in the past, but truthfully, our company moved to another tool that is better suited for our needs. However, while using Panopto, I found the features/functionalities quite easy to use and for what I needed to accomplish, I found it the right tool for me. It is nice to have an easy to use tool with support. I find it impressive how much support I find from the Panopto team, consistently receive emails about updates, etc.

Panopto-powerful but over complicated.

3.0 last year

Comments: Half good, half very frustrating. Faculty have to login for th e1st time to a specifc Panopto link. We did not realize this at first and thought a user could just type in "Panopto" in the URL. So the step by step document/video would have been helpful. Also all the videos need to be linked a specific way no copying and pasting URL's. Panopto has to be turned on in tools in our LMS. We have our faculty create a link to Panopto in the menu of the LMS and have a link to the Panopto site. It is just several steps and it just seems there could be an easier way. We used to sue VidGrid & Mediasite: Our co. made the switch. The recent decision by VidGrid to not undergo the state-required Texas Risk and Authorization Management Program (TX-RAMP) certification for all cloud-based vendors to operate under contract with state agencies and institutions of higher education. Mediasite had many issues, so best to stop using it. The interface was ugly and not so useful also.

Pros:

Panopto's interface is clean cut and not too busy. I like the file areas to the left and the center area for videos. I like that it is integrated into BB, the LMS we use.

Cons:

Panopto was presented to us as an really good option for faculty to use. It has turned out to be not so easy to use. There are many steps that we learned about later that have to be done a certain way or the students cannot access the videos within BB, the LMS. Panopto is integrated into BB, the LMS we use but it is problematic. If someone pastes a link to a video in a text field it will not open correctly for them. The faculty has to embed it correctly using Pan video embed. VidGrid did not require so much for the user.
